Sad Loss of Tony Benn

from John McDonnell MP, Chair of the Socialist Campaign Group of MPs

Commenting on the death of Tony Benn, John McDonnell MP, Chair of the Socialist Campaign Group of MPs, said:

“Tony Benn was the articulate advocate of socialism who inspired my generation and gave us all hope of a fair and equal society. He will be remembered for his principled commitment to his socialist beliefs and his principled stand on so many issues. His passing adds to a terribly sad week for the Left, coming so soon after the loss of Bob Crow.”

Jeremy Corbyn MP said:

“Tony Benn. A legend of indefatigable optimism, humour and strength of ordinary people to achieve enormous changes. It was an honour and privilege to work closely with him for decades and we owe him so many thanks in so many ways for all he taught us from promoting public ownership of industry, to understanding our own radical history, ending racism and discrimination, opposing wars and nuclear weapons.

Above all he inspired us to understand values of democracy and honesty in our cause. There will be a big gap in the lives of millions today and we will be missing a vital speaker at every progressive cause and rally. Deepest sympathy to his wonderful family and sadness at the passing of a great humanitarian and friend to so many of us.”

Sadly, many have fallen for this deception and the ‘look over there’ politics that has rose to prominence since the Conservatives returned to power in 2010. [continue...]

Rail bosses are using the recession as an excuse to attack jobs and conditions and cut back on services and essential rail works, and hike rail fares - as LEAP research suggested they would. Thousands of jobs are being threatened or have been lost. At the same time rail fat cats are raking in big profits and bonuses on the back of the most expensive fares in Europe. Make no mistake: as the recession worsens so will the attack on rail workers and rail services. [continue...]
