PRESS RELEASE
29/04/2014
For Immediate Release from John McDonnell MP
Following the 48 hours of strike action on the London Underground, MPs have tabled an urgent motion in the House of Commons calling for public consultation on the future of Tube Ticket Offices and the alleged misuse of London Underground funds.
The motion says that MPs:
“support the concern of the London Assembly that there has been no public consultation on the future of the tube tickets offices and calls on the London Mayor to halt plans to close tube ticket offices and instead hold a full public consultation to seek the views of passengers and other stakeholders”
The motion also expresses deep concern that:
“taxpayers and tube fare payers money is being used to fund propaganda adverts in newspapers attacking London Underground workers for taking strike action”… and “believes it is deeply regrettable that public money is being used to attack tube workers who have been hailed as heroes after tube bombings and delivering a successful Olympics”
The motion also criticises the adverts produced by the Mayor of London and London Underground as displaying,
“a one sided and misleading version of the issues at stake when tube workers are simply fighting to protect the service they provide to passengers”
The motion also calls for
“..an immediate inquiry as to whether the production of this propaganda to support the Mayor and attack tube workers is a legitimate use of public funds.”

Sadly, many have fallen for this deception and the ‘look over there’ politics that has rose to prominence since the Conservatives returned to power in 2010. [continue...]

Rail bosses are using the recession as an excuse to attack jobs and conditions and cut back on services and essential rail works, and hike rail fares - as LEAP research suggested they would. Thousands of jobs are being threatened or have been lost. At the same time rail fat cats are raking in big profits and bonuses on the back of the most expensive fares in Europe. Make no mistake: as the recession worsens so will the attack on rail workers and rail services. [continue...]
