Press Release - LEFT PLATFORM
Labour Left Meets to Agree Its Policies for the Election Campaign and its Bottom Lines for Any Coalition Talks
This weekend, the Labour Left is meeting to discuss the policy bottom lines it will be promoting in the general election campaign and in any coalition talks that may follow the election.
The Left Platform meeting, convened by Labour MP John McDonnell, on Saturday 7th of February 2015, brings together Left MPs, PPCs, Trade Union Representatives, and representatives from all the main Left Labour organisations, with key Left academics and policy analysts, and progressive campaigning groups.
John McDonnell MP said:
“Many Labour MPs, candidates and activists will want to campaign for a more radical agenda of policies than we have seen so far from the party. Many voters will also want to know that there are people within the Labour Party that are arguing for real Labour policies. They know that voting Labour provides the only realistic prospect that these policies will be implemented. With the risk of progressive votes seeping away from Labour, the Labour Left has a critical role to play in securing a Labour victory. If Labour does fall short of an overall majority and ends up negotiating a policy programme in any form of coalition, the Left will not allow itself to be ignored and will also have its own policy bottom lines for any negotiations.”
For further information on the arrangements and agenda for the Left Platform meeting on Saturday 7th February from 11am to 4pm at ULU Malet Street, London WC1E 7H see the website www.leftplatform.com
The Left Platform is sponsored by over 23 Labour MPs and MSPs, 16 PPCs and the 8 key Labour Left Groups: Labour Representation Committee, Red Labour, Campaign for Labour Party Democracy, Labour Left, Scottish Campaign for Socialism, Welsh Labour Grassroots, Left Futures and Left Economics Advisory Panel.
By Ian Hodson It’s great news that a mainstream political party has recognised the importance of taking positive action to raise pay. Since 2008, politicians from all parties along with many in the media, have pushed the narrative that society will somehow improve by imposing austerity and blaming minority groups for the state of the country’s finances. Sadly, many have fallen for this deception and the ‘look over there’ politics that has rose to prominence since the Conservatives returned to power in 2010. [continue...]

Rail bosses are using the recession as an excuse to attack jobs and conditions and cut back on services and essential rail works, and hike rail fares - as LEAP research suggested they would. Thousands of jobs are being threatened or have been lost. At the same time rail fat cats are raking in big profits and bonuses on the back of the most expensive fares in Europe. Make no mistake: as the recession worsens so will the attack on rail workers and rail services. [continue...]
