There is now a consensus among the three main parties that there needs to be drastic cuts in public expenditure. We do not agree. The crisis was not caused by public expenditure but by the failure of private markets and an excess of private debt.
To coincide with Labour Party conference, the LRC and LEAP have published a flyer-briefing ‘Cutting our way to defeat? There is an alternative’ setting the record straight on what caused the crisis, and also putting a positive alternative based on a just taxation system and public ownership.
As the Callaghan government found in the 1970s, cuts will result in defeat - and more importantly suffering for the millions of working class people who did not cause this crisis.
