The MP who chairs the Labour Representation Committee will speak alongside a Croydon councillor at a public meeting in the borough on alternatives to the coalition government’s cuts programme.
Councillor Carole Bonner, who represents Fieldway ward, and John McDonnell, MP for Hayes and Harlington in west London, will lead the discussion at 8pm on Thursday July 19, in Ruskin House, Coombe Road, Croydon, CR0 1BD (full details).
John tried to stand as a left-wing alternative in Labour leadership elections against both Gordon Brown and Ed Miliband. Despite getting considerable backing from party and union members, not enough MPs backed him.
He has produced a document called the “Radical Alternative to Austerity” - which he will talk about at the meeting. Councillor Bonner will speak about fighting the cuts locally.
The meeting is organised by the LRC.
Paul Clark, a Labour Party and LRC member from south Croydon, said:
“Cuts are hitting in Croydon with libraries, play centres and jobs at the council in the firing line.
“We in the LRC think the Labour leadership nationally should be standing up to the Conservative government - rather than saying they would make the same cuts a bit slower.
“We believe there is an alternative of invesment and hope, rather than austerity and misery.”
Everyone is welcome at the meeting.
Paul plans to launch a branch of the LRC in the Croydon area.
