Like many others, my youth shaped my politics. Born in 1979, I believe there were several events and experiences that shaped me and the politics I have today. But although growing up under Thatcher – witnessing the bigotry directed at single mothers like my own, the introduction of the Poll Tax, the freezing of the student grant when my sister went to university in 1989 (which appears like a golden age now) – I consider myself lucky. [continue/comment...]

Don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve a growing suspicion that we will never, in our lifetimes, see a mass movement aiming to renationalise the utilities and infrastructure of the UK; that we will never see a British government that restates the need for a compassionate society and engineers the institutions to achieve this, and we’ll never see a commitment to full employment (whether 5-day week or not) and economic democracy. [continue/comment...]

On Cuentapropismo In Cuba

Hello comrades In Cuba, the Communist Party initiative of ‘cuentapropismo’ was presented to the country by the Cuban Trade Unions. The recent Communist Party Congress adopted that initiative. It consists in allowing the setting up of small enterprises working on their own account. Some may be coops, others will be private. They will have the right to hire and fire. It is not clear how their production will fit in the overall plan. The Communist leaders have said that this initiative should give employment to the hundreds of thousands of workers whose State jobs are being suppressed.  [continue/comment...]
