Facing the severest recession in 80 years, the strategies of both the Government and the Opposition parties are virtually indistinguishable – a consensus across all the main political parties that accepts large scale job cuts and demands massive cutbacks in public expenditure.
Instead of the bankers paying for the crisis they have caused, their bonuses are back, whilst 3 million workers are predicted to be unemployed by Christmas.
Recent disputes and numerous community campaigns have demonstrated that people are increasingly willing to resist these policies and are demanding an alternative.
The trade union movement has a key role to play in organising this resistance and in addressing the question ‘who can represent us now’?
