Justice for Shrewsbury Pickets Campaign

Trade Union Rights

Wednesday 7th December 2011
7:00pm to 9:30pm

at the Twelve Pins round the corner from Finsbury Park tube station (see map).

Historic 40 Year Fight 1972 - 2012

The collapse of capitalism is revealing the capitalist class’ ruthless disregard for working class lives and families, as shown in the UK by the Tories’ determination to sack workers, break long-standing employment agreements, scrap vital health and safety protection and dismantle the welfare state.

The crisis has also revealed that the Labour leadership has abandoned the defence of social justice, and accepted that the working class must suffer the consequences, even though there is no realistic prospect of capitalism recovering. Trade union leaders will not take any socialist initiative against the Labour leadership unless there is massive pressure from activists and the rank and file.

40 years ago, most trade union activists recognised this democratic deficit, and fought for socialist policies in meetings and conferences, on picket lines and in the street as necessary. In the intervening years, the international capitalist class deliberately avoided a direct confrontation with the organised working class, by profiteering instead from its usurious manipulation of international inflation and credit. But that only made matters worse, and the confrontation has become unavoidable.

As part of the continuing struggle for justice for Des and the other Shrewsbury pickets, we are having a film & discussion meeting, with coverage of this historic struggle and interviews with Des & Ricky. Speakers will include strikers from 1972, blacklisted workers & the sparks current dispute. All welcome.
