Defend services and jobs – say NO to ConDem cuts
The ConDem government of millionaires has unleashed the most savage attack on Britain’s people since the 1930s. Driven by hatred of public services, it has set about dismantling the welfare state under cover of the budget deficit.
Yet Britain’s recession has been caused not by public spending, but by the unfettered speculative greed of the banking system. And while working people ar…e facing devastating cuts and mass unemployment, the banks and corporations have been given year-on-year tax cuts.
For bankers it is obscene bonus as usual, while the rest of us, workers, pensioners, students and children, are told we have to pay for a crisis we had no part in creating.
The government says there is no alternative, but this is simply untrue.
Clamping down on the £120 billion of tax avoidance and evasion each year would wipe out three quarters of the national debt over five years – while cancelling Trident would save the Treasury another £80 billion, and a tiny Robin-Hood tax on financial transactions at just 0.05 per cent would bring in £30 billion a year.
If the cuts go ahead they will cost 600,000 public sector jobs and destroy another 700,000 in the private sector.
We need only to look across the Irish Sea to see the consequences of massive public spending cuts. Ireland has been plunged into a double-dip recession, costing the taxpayer billions more for another bank bail-out.
The need to fight back has never been more urgent. The TUC is united around a programme of community and industrial action, and Labour needs to be a part of that movement – mobilising the party’s working-class core to defend services, jobs and pensions.
That fightback has started – come to the Labour Representation Committee’s Winchester meeting on November 11 and join it.
