Monday 19th October 2009
11:00am to 4:00pm
For a generation, progressives campaigning against poverty have defended the welfare state, especially the benefit system. The stress of resisting changes for the worse has been intense, giving us little time to discuss the changes we would like to propose.
The 2009 TUC Poverty Conference is designed to be a starting point for this conversation and we plan to have sessions on the problems with the current system, the welfare state in other countries, a fair balance of rights and responsibilities, minimum incomes, in-work poverty and dignity for social security workers and claimants. The speakers will include:
Richard Wilkinson, author of The Spirit Level, why more equal societies almost always do better
Mark Serwotka, PCS General Secretary
Kate Green, Child Poverty Action Group
Jonathan Rutherford
The conference is free to attend, but you must register (with your name, address, telephone number and any dietary requirements) by emailing Jennifer Mann at the TUC: (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
