TRADE UNIONS AND WORKERS PARTIES
TO MEET PUBLICLY AND OPPOSE THE WAR ON SYRIA

3.6.12

I wish to denounce with the greatest indignation and anger the campaign of world capitalism and imperialism to justify a new war, this time against Syria.

And to denounce also the covert intervention in Syria of NATO agents, the CIA, MI6, Mossad and Middle East feudal reactionaries - alongside would-be bourgeois - to force ‘regime change’ - as in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya before. Incapable of reproducing its own bourgeois nationalism, now rotten to the core and moribund, world capitalism wants the death of any revolutionary nationalism, actual or potential.

The rule of capital through wages and labour has reached its absolute limits and needs revolutionary overthrow.  Sensing its end coming near, capitalism prepares for war not against Syria, or Iran, but against the USSR, China and the world masses whom it sees as the originators of Workers and Revolutionary States.  The attacks on Syria and Iran are just steps towards this.

The imperialist-inspired massacre at Houla - as happened in Libya before - highlights the mad fury of capitalism and its feudal allies. The conduct of Netanyahu of Israel indicates that sectors of world capitalism want war on Syria and Iran, even should this mean world war. But the world masses repudiate this. In Latin America, the countries of ALBA (with Cuba at the centre) have sent ambassadors to Damascus to uphold Syria’s right to territorial integrity and sovereignty.

At the UN Security Council, Russia and China vetoed imperialism twice.  Earlier in the year, Russia announced its readiness to use pre-emptive strikes against NATO, should it feel indirectly aimed at. It is not civil war that capitalism fears in Syria, but a greater anti-imperialist union between Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt - even S. Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, etc. Imperialism doubts and vacillates. It uses the Annan’s plan to gain time, because it does not know where it is going.

The leaders of the international Trade Union Centres (ETUC and WCTUs), along with those of the major Workers Parties of the world, keep silent about Syria or refrain from blaming NATO.  When Socialist Francois Hollande calls for “Assad to step down”, it is to reassure NATO.  Such leaders do not mind overmuch the terrorism of the world bosses. They hope that the workers will be too intimidated to think of overthrowing capitalism - and these ‘workers’ leaders.

Let’s call for meetings in the workplaces, at the base of the Trade Unions and in the communities, to insist on the right to discuss Syria in public. Let’s build local anti-imperialist Unions/Workers Parties/Communities united fronts in each country. These will condemn the war on Syria today, tomorrow they will want power.

Britain out of NATO, NATO out of Europe!
